Several years back, the quirkily entertaining Philippine indie band Ciudad released an album with the affectionate title: Is That Ciudad? Yes, Son It’s Me. My favorite track was easily an acoustic ballad with Ciudad asking (former Nirvana drummer and now Foo Fighters leader) Dave Grohl to please return to drumming instead of playing guitar, and furthermore to return to the long-haired look Grohl once sported in the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” music video. Typical Ciudad humor. The title of the track? “That Guy from Nirvana is Now With Foo Fighters.” Gotta love it, right?
Here’s the original track by Ciudad:
It actually prompted me to think of doing a remix for them — just for fun. I contacted Quark Henares, (now a director, but then their band mascot) to throw the idea at him and he said go for it. Which I did. Unfortunately, I don’t remember if I ever sent it to him as I said I would.
Cut to the present. After searching backups, I realize my assembly files for the remix have disappeared. All I have left are the Reason files for the backing tracks. I don’t even have the edited vocals which I chopped up and EQ’d so lovingly. Drats! I thought it would be a good idea to actually go ahead and flesh the thing out some more so I re-arranged some parts and simplified others, and re-did the drums then simply pasted the vocals on top using Vegas.
And voila. It’s a draft mix by all accounts. But it was fun to do (again) and it’s fun to listen to. So I’ll leave it at that.
